THE APPRENTICESHIP ADVANTAGE: INSIGHTS FROM A MENTOR

From 10th to 16th February, we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week – an annual event highlighting the value, benefits, and opportunities that apprenticeships offer.

At Alfred H Knight, we support apprenticeships as a stream of development – whether for those who are just starting in the world of work, or those who have worked with us for many years. Aligned with the National Apprenticeship Week theme of 2025 ‘Skills for Life’, we are committed to equipping apprentices with lifelong skills that empower them to thrive in both their personal and professional development.

AHK colleague, Greg Mattinson

Greg Mattinson, Learning and Development Business Partner at Alfred H Knight shares his insights on all things apprenticeships.

From key skills of a successful apprentice to valuable advice for those starting their journey, Greg offers everything you need to know for a successful journey – straight from the perspective of an experienced apprenticeship mentor!

MY JOURNEY TO BECOMING A MENTOR

Greg’s journey to becoming a mentor has been many years in the making. He was part of a trailblazer group in 2016 and 2017 that focused on how the apprenticeship programme would be delivered, leading to the standards we know and work towards today.

“I have seen apprentices start at the lowest levels and progress to senior management positions. Apprenticeships level the playing field and open doors for everyone, especially considering they have historically been seen as non-academic career paths.”

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS AN APPRENTICE

Apprenticeships are only successful when everything is aligned – Greg believes that “success is having the right programme for the right department and ultimately the right person”. This highlights the importance of a tailored approach, where the structure of the apprenticeship is designed to meet the specific needs of both the business and the individual.

Gaining experience working while applying learned concepts can develop and support individuals on their career paths. This approach fosters a continuous learning cycle where the apprentice can reinforce their theoretical knowledge.

BUILDING YOUR CONFIDENCE AS AN APPRENTICE

Greg and the learning and development team at Alfred H Knight are committed to creating an environment where apprentices feel heard, valued and empowered to thrive in their careers.

“I want to know that all apprentices know that I am here to support them, along with the rest of the learning and development team. I act as a ‘go-between’ for the apprentices and the providers, but my main priority is always the individuals themselves”.

ADVICE FOR CURRENT AND ASPIRING APPRENTICES

Apprenticeships are not easy; balancing work and study takes commitment. However, if you put your best efforts in and seek and accept support where needed, an incredible career at Alfred H Knight awaits you.

“My advice is to work hard, be present and actively seek out any opportunities that come your way.  As an apprentice at Alfred H Knight, if you have any concerns, please talk to your direct supervisor or the learning and development team”.
