According to CEWEP (Confederation of European Waste-to-Energy Plants), over 19 million tonnes of incinerator bottom ash (IBA) are produced annually. As recovery processes improve, it is becoming easier to reprocess and recycle this material for use as a secondary aggregate or to extract useful and valuable metals for co-firing at a smelting facility.

If recyclers, reprocessors and smelters are to extract the maximum value from their IBA, they must build an accurate profile of the composition of their material. When dealing with a large and varying amount of IBA however, producing a relative sample can be tricky.
