UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) – Are you prepared?

WHAT IS THE UK EMISSIONS TRADING SCHEME (ETS)?

The UK ETS (United Kingdom Emissions Trading System) aims to help the UK achieve its climate targets by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuels. By setting a cap on the total amount of CO2 emissions that certain industries can emit, and through incentivising allowances, organisations are encouraged to innovate and invest in low-carbon technologies.

HOW WILL THIS IMPACT ENERGY FROM WASTE?

Energy from Waste facilities will be included in this system come 2028. However, from 2026-2028, they will be required to monitor their emissions in line with the plans, even where the full financial obligation is not applied.

It is worth noting that only fossil-based emissions are subject to carbon pricing as part of this scheme. It is estimated that the overall financial cost to the waste sector from ETS could be up to £1.4bn (at a carbon price of £150/t).

HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I AM READY FOR THE UK EMISSIONS TRADING SCHEME (ETS)?

As an operator or manager of an EfW facility, you must be proactive in your approach and start to monitor your CO2 emissions as soon as you can do so.

By conducting regular composition and chemical analysis, you can gain a comprehensive understanding of the makeup of your waste. This will enable you to build a reliable profile of your fuels and determine which materials contribute to fossil-based emissions.
