Meet Caitlin Patterson, our Risk and Insurance Graduate!

WHAT ARE YOUR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT ALFRED H KNIGHT?

I assist the Insurance and Risk teams in identifying and mitigating risks, managing liability claims and ensuring supplier compliance. I collaborate with various departments to support projects and initiatives, including motor and travel insurance for colleagues. 

Additionally, I focus on compliance and policy adherence, address general insurance inquiries and provide project support for teams within the GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) department.

 

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at AHK, growing both professionally and personally through internal workshops organised by the Learning & Development team. Additionally, I’m in the middle of completing my Level 3 Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship to further enhance my skills and excel in my role.

Collaborating with various departments on different projects has been a rewarding experience, highlighting the dedication across the group and how each role contributes to the success of Alfred H Knight. I appreciate that my work has been recognised within the team and will continue to develop in my role moving forward.

A standout moment in my role so far was the opportunity to travel to Malaysia, where I gained valuable insights into our operations and oversaw a property survey. 

 

HOW HAS ALFRED H KNIGHT SUPPORTED YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SINCE JOINING, AND WHAT SPECIFIC PROGRAMMES OR INITIATIVES HAVE MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT?

Alfred H Knight’s Learning and Development team provides ‘Unlock Your Potential’ Workshops’, which have contributed to my professional growth. These workshops have significantly influenced me, as effective communication with colleagues across the group is essential to my role.

The ‘Self-Awareness’ workshop was critical because it addressed personal and professional development. This helped me recognise my attributes and understand how these can impact my colleagues around me.

 

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED BY ALFRED H KNIGHT HAVE HELPED YOU BUILD NEW SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE, EXPANDING ON YOUR EXPERTISE?

In my role, I’ve had the opportunity to present initiatives, ideas and projects to colleagues in other departments. This has significantly boosted my confidence in public speaking and enabled me to collaborate effectively with teams outside of my own. 

I am also completing my Level 3 Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship, which is enhancing my technical knowledge of insurance. This has given me the confidence to address insurance queries and take the lead on tasks without relying on management guidance. 

Additionally, I’ve been attending risk workshops with various departments, which have sharpened my analytical thinking, improved my report-writing skills and will further develop my facilitation skills in the future.
