INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS!

Alfred H Knight recognises the importance of inspiring and setting expectations for the next generation of scientists and the new talent young people bring to the industry. Recently, we had the privilege of showcasing this by hosting an event at our headquarters in Liverpool, Merseyside, for students and staff from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC.

The event was tailored to inspire young minds considering careers in chemistry or laboratory sciences and to showcase the diverse opportunities available within the industry.

Earlier, students met with Nicholas Aldridge, Junior Project Manager Graduate, who delivered a presentation introducing Alfred H Knight, himself, and his role at AHK. In particular, he shared insights into the industry and discussed various career opportunities within the laboratories.

Interactive Lab Tour

After the laboratory talk, Robbie Hand, Learning and Development Advisor and Adam Moss, Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprentice, gave the students a tour of John Knight Laboratory, Alfred H Knight’s principal facility situated at our Group Headquarters in the UK.

“The tour covered various laboratory sections, including General Chemistry, Precious Metals, and X-ray, demonstrating the techniques and instruments used in sample analysis. The students engaged with thoughtful questions, which were answered in an accessible, relatable manner, connecting industry concepts to real-world contexts without excessive technical detail.”Adam Moss, Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprentice.

Inspiring the Next generation of scientists

Later, the group took part in hub talks with Maya Killcross, Technical Representative, Jeremy Brown, Group Technical Development Manager, Aaron Dunne, Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprentice and Jenson Sadler, Apprentice Laboratory Scientist. As part of this, students were able to network and interact with current apprentices to understand their experiences and pathways.

“As a group, we spoke about our roles and the paths that led to us working here, including our varied educational backgrounds. Jenson and I were also able to talk about our experiences in regards to degree apprenticeships. The students seemed very engaged and asked lots of questions. By the end, many of them seemed very interested in degree apprenticeships and other careers within AHK.” – Aaron Dunne, Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprentice.

Hands-on experience

Finally, the students received a hands-on practical with Lily Cross and Declan Seddon, Apprentice Laboratory Scientists, allowing the students to experience a real-life laboratory in action.

“The day was incredibly positive, and the students were visibly enthusiastic and engaged with the hands-on practicals. It was great to see their eagerness to learn more about the activities, and their curiosity fuelled the interactive session.” – Declan Seddon, Apprentice Laboratory Scientist.

All in all, the event was a testament to Alfred H Knight’s commitment to nurturing future talent and strengthening connections within the industry. It provided the students with a unique opportunity to explore the inner workings of the business and observe the laboratories in action.
